How I Found Work-Life Balance That Works for Me (And Why You Should Define Yours)

READING TIME - 4 MINUTES

Work-life balance has changed a lot over the years.

What I thought was balance 10 years ago looks nothing like what I consider balance today.

Everyone’s version of balance is different, and the way I’ve approached it has evolved with time.

The Early Days: 9-5 and Weekends Off

Fifteen years ago, my version of work-life balance was simple—work 9-5, take weekends off, and call it a day.

Even though I never actually worked just 9-5, that was my goal.

I thought that if I could fit my work within those hours and then have free time on the weekends, I’d be set. But as many of us know, that idea doesn’t always play out in reality.

Today, my approach is far more flexible, and honestly, I’ve come to love working on the weekends because it gives me the chance to get ahead.

How I’ve Evolved: 4 Key Strategies for My Work-Life Balance

Now, work-life balance isn’t about fitting into a specific mold.

It’s about what works for me, my family, and my personal goals.

Here are four things I do to help keep balance in my life:

1. One Big Calendar for Everything

One of the biggest changes I’ve made is merging my personal life and work life into one massive calendar.

I start my day at 4 AM—this gives me a solid two hours before anyone wakes up to knock out work without distractions.

It’s quiet, and I can focus on getting things done.

By combining everything in one calendar, I ensure that I’m not missing work deadlines or personal commitments.

It’s a game-changer in terms of staying organized and making sure both my work and personal life get the attention they deserve.

2. Shared Calendar with My Wife

Another key to my balance is having a shared calendar with my wife.

We plan our schedules together and make sure we’re aligned on important dates and events.

This way, we’re not caught off guard, and we both know what’s coming up.

It ensures we can attend all the family events and stay connected with each other, even with our busy schedules.

3. Leveraging Technology to Work Smarter

I’m all about using technology to my advantage.

Leveraging AI has allowed me to get more done in just a few hours than many people might get done in a whole week.

It’s real, and it’s helped me work efficiently.

The time I save by using AI tools gives me more freedom to enjoy my personal life and still meet my professional goals.

4. Daily Priorities: Not Just Work, But Family Too

Every day, I make sure to write down my top priorities.

And those priorities are not just work-related—they include personal and family time as well.

Whether it’s spending time with my kids or making sure I’m available for a family event,

I know that having a balance means focusing on both my personal and professional priorities.

This list helps me stay grounded and focused on what truly matters each day.

Finding Balance That Works for You

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years: work-life balance isn’t about fitting into someone else’s definition.

It’s about finding what works for you.

What works for me isn’t what works for everyone else—and that’s okay. It’s important to take a step back and think about what balance truly means for you and your family.

Yes, I still work long hours each day, but I feel more balanced now than I did 10 years ago.

The balance I’ve created allows me to be productive at work while also being present for my family and for myself.

So, as you think about your own work-life balance, don’t get caught up in what others are saying.

Build the balance that makes sense for you and your family!
