Feeling Lost in Your Career? Here is How To Find the Work You’re Meant to Do!

Feeling Lost in Your Career? Here is How To Find the Work You’re Meant to Do!

READ TIME - 5 MINUTES

There are two types of people today: the 5% who have found their passion and figured out how to monetize it, and the 95% who are still searching for what they’re meant to do in their career.

This article is for the 95%.

Here’s an interesting stat I found by searching questions on Google:

  • How to decide a career path? - 81 million results
  • How to find a dream job? - 616 million results
  • How to choose the right career? - 1.3 billion results
  • Finding your calling and what you’re meant to do in your career? - Over 5 billion results

It’s one of the hardest questions I had to answer for a long time—what am I meant to do in my career?

It’s an easy question to ask but so hard to answer.

Most people struggle to answer this question because they feel the answer is one thing. “I’m meant to do XYZ, and if I figure it out, I’ll be happy.”

Well, I’m not sure there’s such a thing as “one thing that could make me happy forever.”

I went to college for Finance, and the minute I graduated, I had zero desire to be a finance guy.

I joined corporate, and a few years in, I thought I wanted to be a project manager. Eight months into it, I realized it wasn’t for me.

Then I moved to training, but a few years later, I felt bored. Then I moved to operations, quickly realized it wasn’t for me, and then moved to sales… you get the point.

Our interests, passions, and outlook on life change over time.

But there is a way to narrow those thoughts and get closer to what actually makes you happier and more fulfilled.

I can’t guarantee you’ll love it forever.

In this newsletter, I’m going to share a few things I did that helped me get closer to what I like in my career.

Finding 1: The Myth of “One Thing” That Will Make You Happy Forever

There’s no such thing as one thing you can start doing today that will make you the happiest forever.

Yes, it happens to 5% of people, but what about the other 95%?

Look around you and see the people who are doing well—they’re often juggling multiple things or have done many things in their careers to get to where they are.

I know doctors, lawyers, and financial advisors who invest in real estate, not because they want more money but because they want a change.

I’m a business owner, work for a corporation, coach on the side, and I am still open to my fourth thing.

Finding 2: To Get Closer to What Makes You Happier, You Have to Try Many Things

How many times have you bought shoes online, tried them on, and couldn’t wait to box them up and send them back because they weren’t what you expected?

I hate to use this analogy, but how often we think we might like something, only to find out we don’t when we try it.

So, the best thing to do is try things out and never assume.

Try different departments, companies, and industries, and see where you fit best.

After being in sales, operations, supply chain, customer service, project management, and many other roles, I can now say that I enjoy coaching and sales the most—and I see myself doing them for a long time (not forever, though, because I can’t guarantee that).

Finding 3: Pay Attention to How You Feel When You Do Things

This is the one I wish I had paid attention to earlier.

How we feel inside when we do things is not random. It’s linked to our passions.

If you do something and feel good, do more to see if that feeling grows.

Eighteen years ago, I was a mentor and coached other agents on the phone. Every time I did it, I went home happy and couldn’t stop talking about it.

Now (20 years later), I love coaching and mentoring people so much that I want to do it full-time.

Finding 4: Life Is Too Short to Keep Wondering—Decide and Move Today

The worst thing I’ve done in my career was waiting longer than I should have.

If I could go back in time, the only thing I would change is acting more on what I thought I liked or enjoyed.

Money, family, timing, and many other factors held me back, but I could have done it, and I would have been just fine.

My own mindset held me back, and I hid behind excuses.

If you’re in the same situation, I’m 45 years old, and I’m telling you—don’t wait; act now.

Regret is hard!

At the end of the day, your future is shaped by the choices you make today.

Look back and write down the choices you made 5-10 years ago, and you’ll see that your life today is because of them.

Today, you will be the youngest you will ever be. So, if you want to change and try new things, today is the right day to do so.

The biggest point of this entire article is to encourage you to try things so you can find what makes you happier and more fulfilled.

Most of us know what needs to be done, so I won’t remind you of that, but I’m here to remind you to take the step!

I’m rooting for your success!

Bring it home!
