Have you ever found yourself in a meeting with executives and felt like you're not quite hitting the mark? Communicating with executives is an art. It's not just about what you say but how you say it.
Rule 1: Stick to the Big Ideas
Executives don't want to be bogged down with daily details. They're looking at the big picture, so you need to escape from the minutiae and speak at a high level. Focus on outcomes, key metrics, and strategic initiatives. But always be prepared to dive into the details if asked.
Rule 2: Show Confidence in Your Words
Confidence is non-negotiable when communicating with executives. Your confidence instills trust. Never come across as scared or overly deferential. Instead, speak like you are part of the executive team, even if you're not.
Rule 3: Highlight What's Important
When speaking with executives, focus on what truly matters to them. Avoid asking too many questions and steer clear of over-talking in an attempt to impress. Executives value concise, focused conversations that get to the point.
Rule 4: Elongate Your Time Frames
Executives think in terms of quarters, years, and long-term goals. Discuss how your initiatives align with the company's long-term vision and strategy. By doing so, you demonstrate that you're thinking beyond the immediate.
Rule 5: Think Like a Business Owner
When you speak with executives, they want to know that you understand the business as a whole, not just your piece. Talk in terms of value, ROI, and strategic outcomes. Show them that you're thinking critically about how your work drives the business forward.
Your communication can either open doors or close them. Make sure you're always opening doors.
