| We've all felt it. You're working long hours. Crushing your numbers. Helping everyone on the team. Then someone else gets promoted, someone who's been here half as long and knows half as much. You stare at the announcement thinking: Seriously? | ||||||
| I used to think that too. Until I realized I wasn't seeing the whole picture. Most people believe promotions are earned by becoming the expert, being reliable, working hardest, and waiting patiently. But that belief is what keeps people stuck. Promotions don't go to the most experienced. They go to the most visible, strategic, and prepared for what's next. | ||||||
| What people who get promoted do differently | ||||||
| 1. They focus on the right results. Not just the job description. What actually matters to leadership. Years ago I noticed our CEO made CSAT a top initiative. Everyone heard it. Few acted on it. I made it my team's mission. We executed so well, my name was in every executive update. I didn't just hit the target. I helped leadership look good hitting theirs. That's what sticks. | ||||||
| 2. They build the right perception and brand. They show up like leaders. They speak like leaders. They don't just do the work. They make the work known. Not in an arrogant way. In a strategic way. They tell stories about wins. They speak up in meetings. They build trust through visibility. | ||||||
| 3. They communicate with confidence. Even if they're not the smartest in the room. Even if they're still learning. They know how to speak with clarity and conviction. Every exec you admire has this one skill in common. If you can't communicate your value, no one is going to guess it for you. | ||||||
| You don't get promoted for the job you're doing. You get promoted for the job you look ready to take. Focus on what your leadership cares about. Build a brand that speaks for you when you're not in the room. And speak like you already belong at the next level. | ||||||
